They arrrived on the Parade site super early dressed in their team colors. Anne is showing her team spirit right down to her shoes. They enjoyed the full three hours of floats, celebrities, marching bands and equestrian splendour pass by under a sunny January California sky.
Following the parade, they walked to the Rose Bowl and sadly witnessed the USC Trojans victory over Illinios Fighting Illini. The final score was Southern California 49, Illinois 17.
Anne was actually born in Los Angeles, though she only lived there for her first nine months. She went to visit the home of her infancy on 3rd Avenue East, all these years later, the house was still there.
Anne assumed that she may never venture to back Southern California so she made a point to enjoy a full tour sweep of L.A. from the fashion boutiques of Rodeo Drive, the foot prints at Gruman’s Chinese Theater and on to the Santa Monica Pier where they enjoyed Mexican cuisine in a lovely restaurant along Santa Monica Beach. Anne also went to the La Brea Tar Pits which, as a biology teacher, she found particularly fascinating. When the group saw all the sights on their list of Los Angeles, they drove up the coastline along the edge of the Continent as far as San Jose before Anne returned to Chevy Chase.

All of Vicky's friends and neighbours, here on Leland Street send their heartfelt condolances to Vicky and her family over the passing last week of her sister, Hope. Vicky has shared many stories about her family through the Leland Street News and when the ladies of Leland Street gather for baby showers. We have learned about the good times they shared during the family summer retreat in Maine and how much fun the cousins have together. We understand that Hope is gone too soon but the memories live on in their hearts.

Hope Gregory (Taplin) Pfeifle, 48 of Franklin died January 8 in her home of cancer in the care of her husband of 19 years, Thomas Nash Pfeifle. Born in Boston, the daughter of Franklin P. Taplin of South Hadley and the late Nancy (Stearns) Taplin, Mrs. Pfeifle was raised in South Hadley and had lived in Franklin for the past 14 years. Hope was a graduate of Skidmore College and received a MA from Boston College in University Administration. Most recently, she had worked for the Stonehill College Library as a librarian’s assistant.
She was a loving and devoted mother, loyal friend and extraordinary wife and companion. She loved sailing and being on the water at her Maine summer home. In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by her daughters, Sarah Lydia Pfeifle 15, Kimberly Ann Pfeifle 12 and Mary Elizabeth Pfeifle 9.
She is also survived by her brother, Dana H. Taplin and his family of Brooklyn, New York, and her sisters, Carol Taplin of West Roxbury and Victoria L. Delaney and her family of Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Bateman Family:
The Bateman family spent Christmas here at home, a very relaxing change for us!
After a somewhat hectic fall, it was really nice to have all five of us together with time to hang out and just enjoy the holiday and each other.
Will has now returned to Clemson to finish the last half of his senior year - hard for us to believe!
As for movies, Jill, Terry, and Will saw Atonement and thought it was really well done - Jill thought it wasn't as good as the book but what movie is? Also, Charlie Wilson's War was great - highly recommended.
We wish everyone a very happy New Year and many blessings for 2008. We all begin the year without any groundbreaking resolutions but with much gratitude for family and friends.
Cosmas Family:
Farrell wishes to thank all her wonderful friends on Leland Street for their meals on wheels during her recovery her back siege. She and Bill were well fed and felt much loved. Farrell enjoyed the meals and the visits and is very impressed with the Leland Street Chefs.
BIll and Farrell enjoyed having Will home from Boston for the Christmas holiday.
Wednesday January 16th, Farrell is having a proceedure done which is like putting a cast on the back. She has been assured that she should be feeling good as new very soon.
***Farrell had surgery on her back at Sibley Hospital on January 16th and returned home on Friday. She is feeling much improved and ready to welcome phone calls and visits.
Duffy`s
The Christmas holiday was great fun for us. Matthew was very engaged and soaking up lots about the holiday traditions. He spent a good deal of time playing with our nativity scene - "look Mommy, wise man tackle baby Jesus." Charles and I really thought Matthew understood quite a bit it until he announced to the video camera on Christmas Eve - "we celebrating Halloween!"
We travelled to North Carolina, visiting both sides of our family. We spent Christmas Eve and morning at Bonnie's sister's house in Chapel Hill. Bonnie's mother, sister and brother all live in Chapel Hill. The Hogue Christmas Eve tradition is going to an early church service then a dinner of roast oysters, cole slaw and french bread. Matthew was not ready to eat oysters, but he discovered hot chocolate, and had fun putting out cookies and carrots for Santa.
Matthew also enjoyed singing (over and over) Jingle Bells, Frosty and - inspired by the Leland Street carolers - We Wish You a Merry Christmas! At almost 2 1/2, Matthew seemed to enjoy the wrapping and the bows as much as the present within. As requested, Santa brought Matthew a football and some trains. Matthew also enjoyed driving the battery-powered John Deere tractor that Santa brought his cousins.
From Chapel Hill we travelled to Shelby, NC for more celebration with some of the Duffy's - Charles' mother and 2 of his sisters. There we enjoyed lots of good food and visiting with everyone. Bonnie had the chance to see Charlie Wilson's War, and thought it was highly entertaining. Once back at home, we rang in the New Year with dinner - we were joined by Charles' mother and his sister's family who live in McLean. Happy New Year to all!
Davies/Martz
We were largely around the area over the holidays -- Christmas was out Chris's parents' weekend place in WV; Kyle had a short hockey camp in town after Christmas; we were in central PA for a few days when Stephanie's father held a holiday party; and we staged a small New Year's Eve party at our house. The New Year's Eve party is now a 10 year old tradition, in which we cook a few main courses (this year: Daniel Boulud's short ribs and a lobster bouillabaisse) and our friends bring various courses and accompaniments. The most important part, of course, is the theme drink -- to ring in 2008, we made a Champagne cup from the 1937 Savoy Bar Book. Very delicious (and sufficiently potent that one of our partiers was asleep on the floor next to Penelope before 9:30 pm). We capped the evening off with a small fire in the dining room (which had the virtue of permitting Chris to begin the new year by telling Stephanie "I told you so.").
As for movies, Kyle spent the holidays familiarizing himself with the Star Wars oeuvre, which Santa had kindly supplied. He highly recommends them and will stage a light saber fight in our backyard with any willing participants.
Forrest Family:
Our family celebrated Winter Solstice on December 22nd with our traditional gift sharing and holiday dinner before spending the holiday sesaon in different locations. Nicole and a friend flew to Paris to ring in the New Year.
Nicole and Leslie filled the week with a few holiday parties, dinner with friends, a luncheon cruise down the Seine and strolled Montmarte on a particularly sunny day. Zak had a wonderful time with house guests from Canada, California and Ohio. One of those friends, Chad, will be staying with us as Zak resumes production on his film. Marcy and Arthur flew west on Christmas Day, (possibly the easiest travel day of the year) for Arthur’s annual work as Executive Producer-Director of the NBC Rose Parade.

Thankfully there was beautiful weather on New Years day as the floats, bands and notables rolled past the cameras in Pasadena.Marcy’s two brothers and one sister shared the fun of the day and then they all went on to Laguna to visit Marcy’s mother.
In addition to the fun of the Rose Parade , Arthur and Marcy always enjoy the trip as a chance to see California friends and to attend annual events like the Rose Banquet.
Peppe-Gibson Family:
In the midst of our recent snowfall, Molly and Gordon Gibson's thoughts may drift back to summer family fun at Lewes Beach.

We loved having Jennie home for Christmas. We cut down a tree at Butler's Orchard and had Christmas Eve dinner at the Prime Rib. Elizabeth has her fairwell shift as bartender at Parkers Monday night so come on down

Florence has a full house of family visiting for the holiday weekend.
Vincentes:
We stayed here for the holidays, and were lucky to have a local Santa sighting, right in our living room. Mark had threatened to lock Santa in the bathroom if he got too scared, and, luckily, Mark was brave enough so that Santa got away unscathed.
Vike recently planned a surprise date with Wendy to see My Fair Lady at the Kennedy Center, which included a backstage tour. Since then, we've had to suppress ourselves from singing "I could have danced all night" and other favorites while at work. The show was outstanding; Eliza Doolittle could not have been any better.

We're hosting Vike's sister, Mara, for a short time, and so you may see us getting away for dates without the kids. (Thanks, Mara!). As for the kids, Mark has been banished from having privacy in the bathroom because of a recurring issue with flushing nontraditional objects. Peter has learned to use adjectives: we now have purple buses, not just buses, which he will emphatically repeat about 100 times so that you can appreciate his achievement!
Bergem/Stenseth
We enjoyed the holidays at home in Leland Street. For the first time in 5 years we had no Christmas-visitors from Norway.
While the kids missed friends and family, Leni and Knut secretly enjoyed not having to cater for an extended family for weeks.
We also treasured the opportunity to not having to visit the Mall, the Monument and Arlington for the 200th time _. Instead, we attended the My Fair Lady Show at the Kennedy Center (fabulous), visited the Hopper-exhibition at the National Gallery of Art (amazing and magic), and watched the movies National Treasure II and Charlie Wilsons War (both good, but the latter extremely interesting for someone who is trying to understand policy-making in DC).

At the end of this week we will travel to Costa Rica for ten days. Santa Clause – who also this year had time to come by 4130_ – provided the whole family with hiking boots. So we are ready for hiking up volcanoes, horseback riding and canopy rides. But we have made sure to be back for super-Tuesday!
