Spring - Summer

Simpson/Payne:

Maggie, Michael and family honored Turner's 1st Holy Communion with a celebration at their home. Shortly thereafter, Turner enjoyed a playful moment in Jamaica during spring break.

Day time or night time, anytime of day is beautiful at Half Moon Bay in Jamaica.

The Simpson/Payne family enjoyed a fun filled, action packed spring break in Jamaica.

Ayaz:
We have been enjoying the beautiful spring weather with lots of bike rides and soccer practices. Nicole and Tony enjoyed their first “adults only” trip in quite awhile to St. Marteen in April. Tony’s company sponsored a trip to the island and it was a real treat. The food was amazing and the island full of character. The girls had lots of fun with their grandparents while we were away. This is a picture from our trip to St. Marteen. The tattoo was temporary from a pirates themed party the night before!

Sophia will graduate from Manor Montessori next week and is excited to join Arianna at Rosemary Hills next year (along with Matthew Duffy & Peter Vicente!) We will head to Bethany Beach for a week over the July 4th holiday.
The BIG news from our house is the addition of two family members, our new kittens, Tom & Jerry. The kittens are brothers and we all adore them!

The Batemans:
Summer started early in the Bateman home with Annie and Claire returning the first week of May having completed their junior years in college.  Annie is looking forward to starting her internship with United Cerebral Palsy and Claire with the American Institute for Cancer Research.  Both girls also plan to spend plenty of time at the pool too of course! - and are really enjoying being reunited with old high school friends also home for the summer.  Jill is happy to have her chicks back in the nest and all are looking forward to a relaxing summer.
Jill, Terry, and Annie celebrated the parents anniversary at La Costa.

The Bateman ladies enjoy a girls’ night out in Annapolis with Will's girlfriend, Jenny (next to me) and our friend from Nashville, Angela,

Will continues to enjoy his job with Stonebridge (commercial real estate/development) and his new apartment in Glover Park.  He is traveling some to Stonebridge's office in Orlando and is hoping to get the chance to visit the home office soon in Amsterdam. Terry is trying to find more time to play golf and had fun participating in this weekend's tournament at Columbia.  He is also pleased with the abundant growth in the garden after all this rain!

Karasik/Rubashkin:
Jacob has finished FCon, if you went to Eastern Middle School, you know that it is the big end of 8th grade project, with a final presentation at  AFI in silver spring next week acob rounded out his school year with 8th grade projects and field trips to Antietam and Gettysburg/Mt Vernon.

Sophie will be attending Barnard College in the fall, and is quite excited about being in New York! Both she and Jacob are glad to be cycling outside now that the weather is better, and the racing season has started. Rock Creek Velo anticipates a stellar season.
Hannah has finished her sophomore year at Barnard, and has declared herself to be a history major. She will be spending the summer in NY, working at WKCR as the business manager. The rest of us are ready for some warm weather, no homework, and evening walks into town.
David and I spent a lovely weekend in San Francisco, where the weather was cool but sunny, the food excellent (including Ben Delancy's recommendation to dine at Zuni) and the sights beautiful.

We took in an interesting exhibit at the Legion of Honor's museum, which is a beautiful building right near the VA hospital, of all places!  I was there to attend the annual Heart Rhythm Society meetings, which are always very informative.

Duffy:
Bonnie and Charles travelled to New Orleans for the Jazz and Heritage Festival.  The weather was great and we enjoyed every minute of music and food at the Fest.  Numerous Zydeco bands, Aaron Neville singing gospel and Kid Rock were just a few of the highlights.

Memorial Day was particularly meaningful for the Duffy family as Matthew and cousins rode in the Memorial Day parade in Charles' home town of Oakmont, PA. Charles presided over a ceremony naming a viaduct for his father, who served as mayor and PA state representative. The jeep honored Charles' father, Roger Duffy, who was awarded a bronze star for his service in World War II.

Charles and his siblings visited their childhood home.  Not everyone could make it, so it was a smaller gathering than usual. (two spouses and five nieces and nephews weren’t able to come. )

Also over Memorial Day weekend, Ryan was baptised in the same church where Charles' and his five siblings were baptised. God parents sharing the event are Nathalie and John Duffy of McLean, VA. In a more playful moment during a visit to Bonnie’s mother, at Duke Gardens, Ryan demonstrates that he likes baseball as much as Matthew.

Matthew attended an orientation at Rosemary Hills - he loved it and is looking forward to starting there this fall.

Forrest Family:
Arthur and Marcy “Vamoosed” to NYC...for a very special occasion. After all these years, The Dick Cavett Show held a reunion for their production staff.  As the director of The Dick Cavett Show, Arthur was excited to attend the reunion.

While Arthur was reflecting upon old times with Cavett and staff, Marcy got together with four friends from the Fashion world for a fun filled dinner at Swifty’s Restaurant. Marcy and Arthur stretched out the fun for two days with more friends and happenings before returning home.

This was a big “0” birthday for Zak, the family celebrated his 30th with a stop in a martini bar and then onto dinner in Adams Morgan. It was a wonderful sentimental evening.

Nicole and best friend/Maid of Honor, Leslie, flew to Bali for a ten day Yoga/Pilates retreat at Desa Seni. In addition to the intense program, they visited the Monkey Forest Temple and met with Ketut Liyer, the famous Balinese Shaman, catapulted into fame by the book, Eat Pray Love.
It was along way to travel, but a memorable experience awaited them. The monkey in the photo jumped on her back and took the banana from her purse. Could you blame him?? After all her purse is exactly the color of a big banana!!!

After Nicole’s return from Bali she and Steve attended a wedding in Newport Rhode Island. They walked the Cliff Walk, toured the historic mansions of Newport and toasted their friends’ wedding.

The Kazins
It is an interesting time of travel for Beth and Michael they will enjoy a stay near Barcelona, where Michael will be participating in a conference in Barcelona. Later in the summer, he will be teaching in Tokyo for 2 weeks.  Beth will join him near the end and both will likely travel to China for a week.

Maia is coming home for the summer after a very happy freshman year at Stanford.  She just had a role in the play "Killer Joe" which received great reviews and is preparing for final papers and exams. She'll be working at Child's Play for the summer.

Danny is working on behalf of the Democratic candidate running for the Suffolk County, LI county executive seat.  The election will be in November and they expect a tough fight.

The Kinnards:
The Kinnaird Family has had a busy spring.  We have enjoyed having our nephew-in-law stay with us for the past month while he was doing research on the Amish at the Library of Congress and the German Historical Institute.  David,16, has made a recovery from his broken kneecap and continues to work to regain his pre-injury strength.  He has just finished taking his first Advanced Placement test in Macroeconomics.  We are looking forward to seeing his photography in the upcoming art show at school.

Joanie, 14, is counting down the days till graduation from 8th grade. Joanie enjoyed acting and singing in the school play recently as well as being on the St. Patrick's varsity basketball team.

Steve is quite pleased with his birthday present, two Adirondack chairs for the back yard.  They will go in the same perfect spot that the Bolands had their Adirondacks in.  Amanda is enthusiastic about starting some volunteer work for the National Children's Hospital Surgical Care Unit.

Ann Lee:
Ann’s art work was on display at the Yellow Barn Gallery in Glen Echo Park, at the 3rd annual Exhibition of Paintings by the Pat Leibowitz Studio Artists. Find Ann top center amongst the artists and relaxing with her grandchildren.

Recently I had a fun experience with a robin and her babies.  While I was in New York for a couple of days, a robin built a nest on a small window ledge just above my front door.  When I returned we were both shocked when we came eye to eye.  I was careful to stay out of the way and use my basement door.  Soon there were 4 eggs and then 4 little birds.  I couldn't believe how quickly they grew, overflowing the nest.  Last week she pushed them out of the nest and now I study every robin in my yard, wondering if it's my border.

I especially miss them since I no longer have Kali, my dog, who had an inoperable tumor. I am keeping my eye on the Humane Society's web site of shelter dogs and may, after the trips, adopt another dog.

I have some nice trips planned, beginning with a trip to Nags Head with friends (including the Coons, former owners of the Duffy house), then a trip to Ireland with my kids and grandkids, and then finally a trip to Milan, Venice and the lake region of Italy.  It looks like summer is here and with all the rain we look as green as Ireland.   Happy summer!

Riley:
We had an adventure at the zoo. We saw the lion roaring quite a bit and one of the pandas enjoying a nice meal in his/her habitat. Liam also liked the "spray stations" quite a bit and those may have been the highlight of the day.

You may have seen Liam tearing through the neighborhood on his big wheel and me pushing him uphill with a swiffer to save my back. Liam loves to ride his big wheel back and forth to the park.
We have all been looking forward to Cars 2 coming out and we were able to get special sneak-peak tickets to see it a week early. We had a full house for Memorial Day with Christine's parents, my parents, and all my sisters, brother, nieces and nephew over for the long weekend. We had lots of cookouts and took a boat ride on the C&O canal.

We're looking forward to the 4th of July parade and picnic and then a visit to Erie, PA to see friends and family. Christine won Sales Rep of the 4th Quarter and of the year at Oracle direct so we are very proud of her. I have been traveling back and forth to Salt Lake City and Boise Idaho for work.
We have also started on the landscaping, concentrating on the back yard first, then the side hill on Oak Ln, then the front/wall.

Taplin/Delancy:
The Taplin/Delancy family is as busy as ever. Paul played varsity tennis at BCC, and had a good season. He is also on a travel soccer team, and participated in the infamous BAND TRIP! Russell is on the big island of Hawaii on a wilderness trip. If any one needs suggestions for places to eat in San Francisco, Ben is your go-to person!

Patch:
The Patch family was immersed in he spring sport season. Owen played lacrosse in addition to soccer, which Ted coached, and they are having a great season! Emma played softball, also coached by Ted, and Erin started soccer, she scored two goals in one weekend, making her team victorious. Everyone recently went to Baltimore to enjoy Shrek the musical

Bob is doing well, and continues to travel the world. He recently returned from Bonnaire with family, and is going back to Russia this May!

Riley:
The Riley’s are enjoying settling into their new home on Leland street. Liam is excited about his new big wheel bicycle.

Lippold:
All of Leland Street was saddened by the news of the passing of Paul Lippold. Many neighbors will remember how Paul enjoyed sitting in front of his home with his dear dog, Ishkabibble.

Dr. Lippold is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Anne S. Lippold, his four adored children David, Karen, Elizabeth and Susan, his eight loving grandchildren Caroline, Emily, Park, Rachel, Gabriel, Samuel, Olivia and Israel, his two brothers Jack and David, and his ever-faithful canine companion, Ishkabibble.

Paul C. Lippold, an entomologist who worked to improve agricultural crop production in developing countries around the world, died March 17 at his home in Chevy Chase. He was 81.
Dr. Lippold began his overseas work in the late 1960s in what is now Bangladesh. He studied the pest- and disease-resistance of rice strains at the International Rice Research Institute, an organization that was instrumental in sparking the Green Revolution when it developed a high-yield variety of rice.
During the 1970s, he worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Thailand, reviewing chemical pest control practices for crops including cotton, citrus, maize and tobacco.
He continued to work for the FAO in Korea during the late 1970s. In 1979, he moved to Borneo to direct agricultural training extension activities with local government officials and farmers. After a brief stay in the Washington area in the early 1980s, he served in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa with the U.S. Agency for International Development, identifying ways to overcome constraints to food crop production.
Dr. Lippold was fond of sailing, cooking and spending time at his cabin in Moran, Wyo., at the foot of the Teton Range. The Lippold family had a wonderful memorial get together at our house in Moran. The eight grandchildren and two cousins made up a rap song that was delightful about his life, and friends and children spoke lovingly about Paul. The following day we buried his ashes above our house (on our property) toward the top of our mountain and it was wonderful.
